Every Saturday UM-Flint students offer help filing taxes

FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/01/14) - Tax Season is well underway and UM-Flint students set out to reach a big goal. They are planning on helping 1,000 people file their income taxes this year.

Thirty-five students will spend their upcoming Saturdays preparing Federal, State and City taxes for low income or elderly families.

They will be at the Flint Main Public Library every Saturday in March from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Then in April, they will move their services to the Riverfront Building on Flint's campus.

Taxpayers must meet the following requirements and bring the required information to be eligible for this free service:

  • Earn less than $50,000
  • Are not self employed
  • Do not itemize deductions
  • Do not have capital gains or losses
  • Must bring Social Security cards or other official documentation
  • Must bring picture I.D.
  • Must bring all W-2s, 1099Rs, etc. to document income
  • Must bring documentation of bank account number is wanting direct deposit of refunds
  • If own your home, you must bring your 2013 Summer and Winter Property Tax Statements. (These can not be looked up online).
