New DNR hunting, fishing license structures in effect

RICHFIELD TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(03/03/14) - Be prepared to pay a little more to the state if you plan to hunt or fish this year.

A new license fee structure went into effect Saturday, along with other changes.

At the Fishing Tackle Grab Bag, the usual March rush to buy hunting and fishing licenses might not bring the month "in like a lion" like they're used to.

"The discount they had anticipated from last year, was not available this year," General Manager Tom Biggs said.

The Department of Natural Resources scrapped it's old license fee structure for a simpler but more expensive one. "The system is cleaner and neater and I enjoy that," Biggs said.

Instead of 200 types of licenses, people like Gary Stein only have to choose from 42.

In most cases, you'll be paying more. For Stein, it's about $30 extra to hunt and fish. "I'm fine with it. They haven't raised our licenses for years," Stein said.

It's the first major change since 1997.

The DNR expects to raise an additional $19 million this year. Some of that revenue will go to hire new conservation officers.

"More boots on the ground here. Hopefully they use the money wisely," Stein said.

The state might have to wait a little longer to get that extra money.

As Biggs explains, without the so-called "early bird discount" there's no reason to buy now. "They may wait to purchase their fall licenses until the seasons actually approach."

If hunters and anglers wait, so does the state.

"In the past, they received a large amount of license money from customers buying their licenses early to get the discount, they're going to discover that rush of cash may be not forthcoming," Biggs said.
