FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/03/14) - General Motors is moving forward with a new $600 million facility in Flint.

On Monday, officials from GM were on hand to kickoff construction of a brand new paint shop.

Until Monday, it's been nearly 10 years since General Motors held a ground breaking ceremony in Flint.

The automaker continues to make investments in its truck line, this time with officially starting work on a brand new paint shop.

"General Motors has invested $10.2 billion in North American manufacturing," said Gerald Johnson, VP of GM North American Manufacturing. "This $600 million investment in the paint shop here in Flint is just one more milestone on the journey."

The all new environmentally friendly facility is the third of its kind in North America. It'll be 600,000 square feet, or roughly the size of about 14 football fields.

The project will keep about 150 people working, but down the line more jobs could be added.

Construction alone will bring about 1,000 jobs to the Flint area.

The construction will start in a few weeks, and will be done by a Detroit-area company. It will bring about 1,000 jobs to the Flint area.

The entire project will be wrapped up by July 2016.
