Fight breaks out after close win by Saginaw High vs Arthur Hill

CLIO (WJRT) -

(03/04/14) - The Michigan High School Athletic Association is now investigating a fight that broke after Saginaw High beat Arthur Hill in the basketball district playoffs.

ABC12 was the only TV station to have cameras rolling Monday night at Clio High School.

The communications director for the Michigan High School Athletic Association says only adults were involved in the outburst.

ABC12's video shows people rushing to the court after the game ended.

Saginaw High and Arthur Hill met in the first round of district playoffs at Clio High School. The fight started after Saginaw won on a shot in the last 20 seconds of the game, eliminating Arthur Hill for the third straight year, with a 53-51 win.

Security guards were able to break up the fight. No players were involved and no one was seriously hurt.

The MHSAA talked to both schools on Tuesday.

The spectator believed to have started the scuffle will not be allowed to attend any more games at Clio this week and school administrators are working on security arrangements to prevent similar episodes.

We asked an MHSAA spokesperson what caused the fight.

"I think you can imagine the tensions always run high after a tournament game that's close and especially between two schools that have such an intense and marvelous rivalry and so I think the heat of the moment probably got to some people and from what we're told, it was quelled very quickly," said John Johnson.

It didn't take long for Arthur Hill High parent Montoya Addison to learn about the fight.

"I was speechless. My mouth just hunched over because I was waiting to see, well maybe the kids after the game maybe get a little heated which happens sometimes, but all I seen was people in they street clothes and adults. That's sad. What are we teaching our kids?" she said.

At The Intermission Deli in Saginaw, people couldn't stop talking about this video.

"It's sad to see, but I'm not surprised. When I played sports in high school I think the parents got more into than the kids did and they were more upset about things," said Mary Lynch.

Parents say what really makes them angry is that this happened during a time that Saginaw Schools face major budget problems. They fear incidents like this could turn students away.

Addison's daughter tried to attend the game.

"The game was so packed yesterday, my daughter had a ticket and wasn't able to get into the game. She was turned around and I'm kind of glad she didn't go now to see all that drama. What if kids get hurt, then what?" she said.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Department is also investigating this incident. They're asking anyone who saw it to come forward with information.
