After quadruple shooting, Saginaw closes nightclub

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(03/04/14) - Fed up with the violence, the city of Saginaw has closed down Terry's Place, at least for now.

Four people were shot near the night club on Feb. 16. They all survived, but the business may not.

The shooting happened a little more than two weeks ago, and now the city has decided to take action.

"These venues attract a lot of people," said Saginaw's building inspector John Stemple.

There were a lot of people inside Terry's Place, a nightclub on the city's eastside. The building sits within walking distance of the Saginaw Police Department and the main fire station. Three men and a woman were shot outside the club in the early morning hours of Feb. 16.

"The violent acts that occurred there a couple of weeks ago are an issue," Stemple said.

The shooting lead to a city inspection of the business. City records show police have been called there a number of times over the past year and people who come to the club park anywhere they can find a spot.

"They have actually parked in the fire station parking lot in front of the garage doors where the fire trucks leave," Stemple said.

Stemple, along with the police and fire departments, are recommending the suspension of business activity at 701 and 707 Federal Avenue, the addresses of Terry's Place and Club Neutral. The city says the business license is not approved for the use of this property as a club or bar and that serious criminal activity has been generated by the venue. We could not reach the owner of the business for comment.

A hearing will be scheduled to give the owner a chance to answer the charges. The city has permanently closed after-hours clubs where shootings and other problems have occurred.

"We are not going to tolerate that type of activity. If people can't gather peacefully in the city, then we have to take appropriate action," Stemple said.
