Hazmat crews clean up gasoline leak from tanker truck

Posted: Updated:

(03/06/14) - In Genesee County, Hazmat crews spent Thursday afternoon dealing with a tanker truck leaking gasoline.

It happened at the rest area on US-23 in Fenton Township.

At around 1 p.m., a tanker truck heading north on US-23, just north of Silver Lake Road, was driving down the highway when people began honking at the truck, telling the driver to pull over.

The driver pulled over at the rest stop, and that's when he noticed gasoline leaking out and called for help.

The hazmat came to the rest stop, along with the Fenton Township Fire Department.

Fenton Township Fire Chief, Ryan Volz, said around 200 gallons of gasoline escaped, but the ground is frozen, so it did not absorb into the asphalt.

There were no other cars involved and no one was hurt.

The rest of the gasoline in the tanker was put onto a different tanker. Both tankers are now gone and the rest stop has reopened.
