Millington boy fighting for his life after H1N1, community holding fundraiser Sunday

MILLINGTON (WJRT) -

(03/06/14) - A 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life all because of the H1N1 virus.

The Millington eighth grader has been at the U of M hospital in Ann Arbor for more than two weeks.

His family is driving back and forth, but it's getting expensive, so the community is stepping up to help.

We first told you about Brady Gulledge last week. When he was taken to the hospital, his family and friends weren't sure he'd make it back home.

He is doing better, but he's not out of the woods yet.

"You feel helpless, you know, I'm supposed to protect him," said Brady's father, Jason Gulledge.

This all started with the flu. Jason can't believe what his boy is going through.

"I don't ever want to do it again, that's for sure," Jason said.

Brady was a healthy, active eighth grader, but when he got a sore throat, things quickly spiraled out of control.

H1N1 turned into MRSA and bilateral pneumonia.

"The day we took him to the doctor, he just looked really bad, I had to help him get all his stuff on," said Brody Gulledge, Brady's fraternal twin brother.

While his family struggles to cope with all this hardship and the costs, the community is rallying.

"It's very overwhelming, it just shows you there are good people all over the place," Jason said.

Jason drives from Ann Arbor back to Millington every day to take care of Brady's two brothers - and it's expensive. To help, Millington parents are organizing a spaghetti dinner fundraiser this Sunday.

"People who don't even know us, never met us, they're helping out," Jason said. "I don't even know if 'thank you' is enough."

That fundraiser is this Sunday, March 9 from noon - 6 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millington. You can also make donations to Brady Gulledge at any Frankenmuth Credit Union.
