Mid-Michigan police equipment business is expanding

LAPEER COUNTY (WJRT) -

(03/06/14) - A Mid-Michigan business has been seeing a lot of emergency vehicles at its location - but the owners aren't worried at all.

That's what they do for business - install lights and sirens on police cars, fire trucks and ambulances. The Lapeer County company is in pursuit of more emergency vehicles.

Two employees and six contract workers operate Arrowhead Emergency Vehicle Equipment. Many have served as firefighters or other first responders.

"Most of the people who work here, being in public safety, know what is needed to be able to work as far as ease of use and comfort of vehicles," said Steve Major, president of Arrowhead Emergency Vehicle Equipment LLC.

Police and fire departments more than 100 miles away bring their vehicles to Arrowhead for equipment. The company started three years ago in the driveway of Major's Flint home. It now operates a 4,000 square foot garage.

"We're pretty proud of that accomplishment to happen so quickly," Major said.

Much of the work involves police cars.

"When it rolls out, it has the stickers, the lights, the sirens, the computers, everything they need to do their job," Major said.

They also take on ambulances and fire trucks.

"If they need service, we have people who are specially trained to work on the electronics for the ambulances and the bigger rigs," Major said.

The company is opening up a first responder store in the building in a few weeks.

"We can basically equip an entire fire department with anything they need as far as equipment for their trucks, hoses, ladders," Major said.

They haven't forgotten law enforcement either.

"Police officers will be able to get equipment through us as well. Uniforms, gear, tools that they need to do their job," Major said.

The company won't sell firearms.

Arrowhead says having the store in Lapeer will save time for police officers and firefighters who have to travel to the Detroit area to buy equipment.
