DAVISON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(03/07/14) - It was dramatic scene along I-69 in Davison Township when a tanker hauling crude oil exploded in January.

It caused quite a mess - and people in the area are still dealing with the effects. In fact, it led to the evacuation of a nearby apartment complex on Friday.

People at the Windsor Place apartments say someone started knocking on their doors and told them to leave their apartments because they thought there was a gas leak in the complex.

They didn't realize what they were smelling was from the tanker explosion.

Neighbors who live in Windsor Place Apartments in Davison Township say the odor outside of their apartments is strong.

"You stand off, like, 'What the heck is that smell?' I don't like that smell," said Gina Schlip.

What they're smelling it what's left from the tanker explosion that closed a portion of I-69 in Davison Township back in January. Police say the tanker went over the guard rail and crashed onto the road. That tanker was carrying crude oil.

"I just get used to it. I wish you couldn't smell the smell anymore, but it's hard to clean something like that up," said Josh Tokarz.

Crews with Young's Environmental Cleanup have been working all day to clean the sewers in this area now that it's warmer outside. The brutal temps over the past several weeks made it tough for them to get out here.

They say people may notice a stronger odor now that crews are out.

Crews with Young's Environmental clean up say they're close to getting their work done.

The bridge and the roads will have to be cleaned as well. They add that residents don't have to worry about the odor causing any health concerns.
