Linwood water leak fixed, residents remain under boil water advisory

Posted: Updated:

(03/11/14) - Water has been restored for customers in a northern Bay County community.

A major leak in Linwood interrupted service Monday night and forced the cancellation of classes at Linwood Elementary, Tuesday.

Crews started searching for that leak around 7:30 Monday night. They finally found it Tuesday afternoon.

It wasn't your normal water main problem. Instead of bubbling up through the ground, the water was leaking into a storm sewer. That made it harder for crews to find the problem.

About 400 customers in the Linwood Metropolitan water district were impacted. They're now advised to run cold tap water for a few minutes until the water is clear and they remain a boil water advisory until further notice.

"No consumption, you can use it for cooking, cleaning, showering, toilets but do not drink until we get further notice. We have to send the samples to the state and we should be OK then," said Doug Williams, of the Linwood Metro Water District.

Williams says he plans to take those samples Wednesday and should have results back from the state by Friday. There's still no word on when classes will resume at Linwood Elementary.

It hasn't been easy for Metropolitan District customers.

"Big inconvenience when you ain't got water," said Ken Bennett.

When we spoke with Bennett Tuesday morning, he was on his way to load up some water jugs. He and his neighbors were forced to adjust temporarily to life without running water.

"Went and got some drinking water at Meijer this morning and I got tanks in the back right now and we're going to get some water so we can use it in the toilet," he said.

Families are relieved to have drinking water again.

"You don't know how much you miss water until you don't have it. You get up to take your bath, wash your face, brush your teeth," said Joe DeWaele.

"I hope it comes on to where we can drink it without boiling it. That's a pain," said Patricia DeWaele.
