Prayer group meets in Michigan capitol rotunda

LANSING (WJRT) -

(03/11/14) - They call it Truth and Justice Tuesdays. A group of religious leaders and community activists gather in the rotunda of the state capitol to pray for lawmakers and look for answers to pressing social problems. And they say it's making a difference.

They started the prayer meeting and talks last Tuesday. They met again this Tuesday and plan more in the coming weeks.

They say they want to change the culture of state government. Participants believe that for too long the state budget has promoted policies that hurt grassroots Michiganders.

"We're here to pray for the legislature. We're here to pray for our government and the people that are making decisions so they would make fair and equitable decisions for the people," said Rev. Ira Edwards Sr., Michigan Organizing Collaborative president.

"We can make a difference. We've got somebody on our side that we think if pretty important. We just come and pray for them. It's a positive thing. We don't call anybody low down or high smelling. We come to pray for them and ask them to help us," said Rev. David Galbraith, Michigan Prophetic Voices.

The prayer group also takes on social issues, like the state's zero tolerance school policy. A couple of students who were expelled for minor offenses spoke, Tuesday.

"If a person has a gun or a weapon in school, he's a danger to everyone. He needs to be out. Because I didn't have my name tag doesn't mean I get an automatic three-day suspension," Edwards said.

Organizers say prayer makes a difference.

"We're having some success so we're going to keep trying," Galbraith said.

"The only way for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing," Edwards said.

The group will meet again at 11:30 next Tuesday morning on the steps of the Capital then move inside to the Rotunda.
