Investigators: no foul play surrounding death of Saginaw Spirit hockey player

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(03/11/14) - Investigators say there is no foul play surrounding the death of Saginaw Spirit hockey player Terry Trafford.

Police had been searching for the 20 year old since last Monday.

Trafford was recently suspended from the team. He left the Bay County house where he was living and he was believed to be heading for his home in Toronto.

A state trooper found him dead in his truck at the Walmart on Brockway in Saginaw Township, Tuesday.

"Our trooper was patrolling the parking lot here today and observed a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle that the missing hockey player was last seen driving," said Lt. Brian Cole, with the Michigan State Police.

Police believe the truck had been there since last Monday morning, March 3. Trafford was last seen at the Dow Event Center that morning.

It's the last thing family and friends want to hear after a week-long search.

His hockey family sent out this statement, saying, "Our deepest condolences are with Terry's family and his friends both in Ontario and Michigan. Terry played on our team and was a member of the Spirit family for the last four years and he will be missed."

The Ontario Hockey League announced that the game between the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the Saginaw Spirit scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, has been postponed because of this tragedy.
