(03/12/14) - Two men are now behind bars, accused of robbing a retail shop
Wednesday morning in downtown Frankenmuth.
We're told they were arrested around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at a hotel on the east side of Saginaw.
It's possible a third person was involved, so the investigation continues.
The robbery happened around 9 Wednesday morning in the River Place Plaza on Main Street - while police were busy with traffic problems caused by the heavy snow.
The number of armed robberies Frankenmuth Police Chief Don Mawer remembers in his 10 years on the job? "Not very many, maybe two or three," he said.
The most recent was inside the River Place Plaza at the Funky Skunk retail store, which sells Irish-themed merchandise. Two men came through the front door just as the store was opening.
"One produced a handgun right off the bat, threatened the employee, there were two employees at the site," Mawer said. "The two store employees are obviously emotionally shaken."
The men got some cash before running out of the store.
The man with the gun is described as a white male, between 20-25 years old, wearing a blue University of Michigan sweatshirt. Mawer says he was wearing a bandana over his face. The second man is also a white male with dark maroon sweatshirt and pants, and wearing black gloves.
It's possible the men used the snowstorm as a window of opportunity to commit the crime, knowing police might be busy on the roadways.
"This morning, us, along with all police agencies in Saginaw County, were going from accident to accident to accident, so we were extremely busy too," Mawer said.
Mawer says his department will release surveillance video of the incident soon.
