All four bands drop out of Bay City St. Patrick's Day Parade

BAY CITY (WJRT) -

(03/15/2014) - Sunday, Bay City will host its sixtieth annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, but something will be missing from the line up.

All four of the high school bands scheduled to play in the parade dropped out. The bitter cold temperatures expected for the holiday were too dangerous for the students to play in. The weather also threatens the well being of the band's instruments.

"We had about half a dozen kids last year that had damage to their horns. The condensation goes inside the horn and it freezes up, damaging the pads," Scott Struifergen, assistant band director for Bay City High School, told ABC12.

Struifergen also pointed out that some instruments cannot be played with gloves on, so the low temperatures threaten the health and well being of the students.

Still, the parade is schedule to go on. The Bay City St. Patrick's Day Parade will start at 2 p.m. The route begins at Center and Park Avenues, then continues down Center to Water Street.
