Linden students, staff say final goodbye to teacher killed in snowmobile accident

Posted: Updated:

(03/17/14) - The Linden community is mourning the loss of a young teacher who died last week in a snowmobile accident.

Thirty-four-year-old Andy Kargel was a physical education teacher at Linden Middle School.

Last Thursday, he was run over while snowmobiling in Washtenaw County.

"Not many people like that come around," said one of Kargel's students, seventh grader Joey Falcon. "He never really got mad, he always was positive."

The Linden community was shocked to hear Kargel died suddenly in a snowmobiling accident.

Hundreds came to his memorial service to pay their respects. The line to get into the auditorium wrapped down the hall and out the front doors.

"You could be having your worst day ever and Andy could walk into the room and in two seconds make it your best day," said Linden teacher Greg Sinn.

Everybody at the memorial service said Kargel had a gift with kids and that everyone felt special around him.

"He made all of us feel that we were more than we thought we were, like if we had a bad day he would help us through it," said one of Kargel's students, eighth grader Emily Cemazar.

Many say they'll miss Kargel's big personality and practical jokes.

"He would jump out of the recycling bins, they were in the hallway, and he would scare the daylights out of people that way," said Linden teacher Ted Allessie.

He worked at Linden for 10 years and liked the district so much, he chose to drive more than an hour from his home in Saline to teach his students every day.

"Because of him, Linden community is a much better place," Sinn said.

Kargel leaves behind a wife and two kids.

His funeral is 11 a.m., Wednesday at Saint Mary's Church in Chelsea.
