(03/18/14) - Mid-Michigan will have a rather strong presence, Saturday afternoon, at one of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's biggest events of the year.
"It is the 2014 MDA Muscle Walk at Ford Field in Detroit, and there are about 50 or 60 people that have pledged to be there with Team Eli this week," said Jackie Mason, MDA ambassador.
Supporters of Team Eli gathered early Tuesday morning, at Donna's Donuts in Flint Township, to kick off a final week of fund raising - one that will help support families who are dealing with Muscular Dystrophy.
"Donna's is one of the 118 businesses that have participated with Team Eli this year, and it's been amazing. They've been selling shamrocks and have been very supportive and encouraging, as well as every other business we've worked with this year," Mason said.
Team Eli was formed on behalf of Mason's son Eli. Eli was diagnosed with the disease six months ago.
"My three year old, somehow with his sweet little face, has inspired hundreds of people to come together to raise awareness for Muscular Dystrophy and to come together to support a local child," Mason said.
It's safe to say that it's been a difficult year for Eli's family.
"For the first three months, I felt more hopeless than I want any parent to ever feel in their life, so we decided to do something about it," Mason said.
That "something" has gone a long way in spreading awareness - and in recruiting new friends to join Team Eli for the big walk at Ford Field.
"There's going to be super heroes, Star Wars characters, football toss, team spirit awards, cheerleaders. It's going to be amazing. I'm so excited," Mason said.
Online donations are still being accepted, and shamrocks will be on sale at various Mid-Michigan businesses through Thursday.
