(03/18/14) - Senator Debbie Stabenow is weighing on the crisis in Ukraine.
She says the U.S. needs to standby Ukraine.
Russian President Vladmir Putin has ignored threats and sanctions from the U.S. and Europe and moved forward with the annexation of Crimea. He says he's not backing down, and adds Crimea has always been and remains an inalienable part of Russia.
Stabenow plans to meet with a group of Ukrainians in Michigan, who want to talk about what this means for them and their families.
"The bigger question is the rest of Ukraine at this point. I think the sanctions that the president's beginning to move forward on are very important. We need to stand with the people of the Ukraine who care very much about having their own individual autonomy, their own government," she said.
Vice President Joe Biden is working to make sure Ukraine's neighbors know they have American support.
