GM dealers preparing for large safety recall

Posted: Updated:

(03/08/14) - Recent reports say GM CEO Mary Barra says she may have to testify before congressional committees looking into GM's recalls. Barra issued an apology for the way the car company handled recalls involving SUV's with defective airbags and compact cars with faulty ignition switches. The latter has been linked to 13 deaths.

"We are re-doubling our pending problem reviews, bringing them forward and resolving them quickly. We will take care of all these customers and continue to apply what we have learned," Barra said.

General Motors dealers will have a lot of repair work on their hands in the coming days. Owners of GM cars with faulty ignition switches are beginning to receive their recall letters, but it could be three weeks more before repairs begin.

The affected owners should contact their favorite GM dealership after they get the letter.

"That way, we can help you set up an appointment time to get the process started," said Jim Simms of Simms Chevrolet in Clio.

It may be April 7 or later before the replacement part arrives.

"Once we have the part, we'll contact you again and either pick up your vehicle or get you a courtesy ride whenever you need to go," Simms said.

Until then, there are steps you can take to lessen your chances of the engine shutting off as you travel down the road.

"If you do have one of these vehicles, it's highly recommended you take the extra keys off of your key ring and use you ignition key only," Simms said.

Once your car is in the shop, installing the replacement switch shouldn't take much time.

"At this time, we're not expecting that to be a long repair. Obviously though, wear and tear and age of the vehicle will have an affect on how easy the part goes in and out," Simms said.

The recall of 1.4 million compact cars has sparked a number of calls.

"A lot of people are concerned about it and they want to get the right information," Simms said.

Loaner cars will be available for those who leave their recalled cars at the dealerships.
