Howell basketball team back in mid-Michigan after racist tweets by students

DAVISON TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(03/18/14) - Grand Blanc High School was the target of racially charged tweets from students in Howell after a basketball game.

It happened after Howell beat Grand Blanc in the regional championship basketball game, Thursday.

Tuesday, Howell was back in Mid-Michigan for another tournament game.

Howell played Mt. Pleasant at Davison High School. The people we spoke with say the tweets came from a small group of students and don't represent the district.

"These were very hurtful messages and not reflective of our students," said Howell School Public Relations Director Tom Gould.

Gould is calling this a teachable moment about the damage you can do on social media.

"Even if you take it down, it's out there, someone can do a screen grab and it could be with you for the rest of your life," he said.

Right after their victory against Grand Blanc, students took to Twitter with some hurtful messages.

One read: "Not only did we beat Grand Blanc but we're all white. Howell's the definite winner tonight."

Another said: "All hail white power. #HitlerIsMyDad."

"Our student body really took offense to that, and stepped up and reported those to district administration and called out their peers," Gould said.

Gould said five students were involved with the tweets - no one on the team was a part of it.

He tells us corrective action has been taken, but couldn't explain further.

"I know that there were some exchanges between students from both schools on Twitter," Gould said. "I don't know what motivated it, I don't know where it started, and you know we have a great relationship with Grand Blanc and we're going to continue to build that relationship and work with them."

Tammy Menzel has two kids at Howell High School. She was disappointed to learn what happened.

"And I think the people involved felt pretty badly and it was an embarrassment and now we're ready to learn form our mistakes and move on," she said.

Others in the community hope this is a wake up call for parents.

"They gotta know what's going on in the social media, it's what's going on now," Ben Mundy said.

There were plenty of police officers at Tuesday night's game, but they tell us they treated it like any other basketball game.
