(03/19/14) - Say goodbye to Old Man Winter. Thursday is the first day of spring.
With it comes plenty of rain and the serious potential for flooding.
We've seen some big flooding problems over the last few years and it looks like we have plenty of rain heading our way in the next few weeks.
The ground is still frozen, so as snow starts to melt and rain heads our way, all that water doesn't have many places to go.
The National Weather Service is forecasting a 40 to 90 percent flood risk for the state of Michigan.
Michigan State Police are offering a few tips to prepare for flood season.
They say it's a good idea to put important documents and valuables in a water-proof container on the top floor of your home. Make sure you understand how to safely turn off electricity and gas lines in your home, and keep materials like sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting and lumber handy for emergency water-proofing.
