FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/20/14) - Students at the University of Michigan-Flint and Dailey Elementary in the Beecher School District are teaming up to fight homelessness.

Thursday, until 2 p.m., they're selling gently used purses at the UM-Flint pavilion.

$200 was raised in the first 30 minutes.

The idea came from the elementary students during a discussion about homelessness.

"They decided, the children did, we ought to do a fundraiser. I said, 'What are we going to do with that?' They said, 'Let's do purses.' They decided to send it out, tell their parents. We told the teachers we wanted them to donate slightly used and gently used new purses," said Debra Ware, UM-Flint Social Work Dept.

Another purse sale is planned March 28 at Dailey Elementary on Neff Road in Mt. Morris Township.
