(03/20/14) - Friday, former Beecher Buc Monte Morris plays in his first tournament game with the Iowa State Cyclones.
Monte is coming down with his first ever case of March Madness.
His mom Tonia is feeling it for the first time as well.
"It's crazy. I'm excited for him more than anything. He deserves it, he worked hard his whole life. I'm really excited for him," she said.
The former Mr. Basketball is now in the starting lineup as a freshman at Iowa State. His Cyclones play North Carolina Central Friday night in San Antonio.
"Iowa State is going to tear them apart," Tonia said.
Monte's mom will be watching on TV, back home in Mt. Morris.
"Glued and rocking and nervous," she said.
Tonia's kept in constant touch with her son since the team made the trip out west.
"I talked to him two times today, and he was just being an 18 year old. They had gone to practice. He's just laid back," she said.
Instead of offering up basketball advice, Tonia is just being a mom.
"I'm making sure that he has clean socks," she said.
Several of Flint area's basketball legends have rallied around the Morris family, including former Michigan State Spartan Mateen Cleaves.
"Mateen talks to me a lot, so I'm feeling the Flintstone thing, definitely, a connection," Tonia said.
If Iowa State survives the weekend, Tonia plans to travel to New York to watch her son play - a trip that could end with the Cyclones facing the Spartans in the Elite Eight. It's a conflict of interest that Tonia isn't too worried about.
"I don't care. I am ISU Cyclone Nation baby, all day," she said.
