Flint area's blight elimination blitz "on target" says Genesee County Land Bank

Posted: Updated:

(03/20/14) - Nearly 100 homes down and more than 1,500 to go. Genesee County's blight blitz will really ramp up in the upcoming weeks and months.

This is the massive project that kicked off in October.

Michigan received $100 million in federal money. Five cities were targeted - two in Mid-Michigan. The Flint area was awarded more than $20 million to tear down more than 1,600 homes. Saginaw received more than $11 million.

The Genesee County Land Bank is overseeing the project in the Flint area.

Executive Director Doug Weiland says the demos are right on schedule.

Over the winter, crews were busy with cutting and plugging utilities and doing environmental remediation that was necessary before more of the demolition could occur.

This month alone, Weiland says, they've received bids for more than 300 properties. He expects to be reviewing them in the next couple of days and releasing bid awards next week.

The majority of the demos are in the city of Flint.

"You're going to see a lot of work being done in the Northwestern High School area, the area around Northern High School on over to Dupont Street," Weiland says. "And down in the south end of the city as well, all going on in the next couple of months."
