Flint Post MSP troopers pull man from burning home

FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/21/14) - They say they were simply in the right place at the right time. Two Michigan State Police troopers, on patrol in Flint, pulled a man from his burning home.

Trooper Matt Kalakay said he and partner, Trooper Sean Thomas were patrolling near Carpenter and Dort when they heard the call go out around 6 a.m. Thursday, March 20.

The home, in the 1800 block of Woodlin Drive, had visible flames and was filled with smoke when they arrived, said Kalakay.

The man's mother, who also lives at the home, had made it outside safely. They all shouted for her son, but couldn't get a response.

Kalakay said he went inside the home first, Thomas followed behind him, and they found the man on the floor. He was in bad shape, but conscious, Kalakay said. He is expected to be OK.

A press release from Michigan State Police called the rescue "an outstanding act of bravery" by these two troopers.

Thomas was involved in another rescue ABC12 reported on in August. He and then partner Jeff Rodgers were transporting someone to the city lockup when they heard the call go out. A fisherman had fallen into the Flint River, but they pulled him out.

"I guess it's all timing," Thomas said.
