Local gay couples prepare to marry

(03/21/14) - A federal judge struck down Michigan's gay marriage ban, following a series of similar decisions happening across the country.

The women who filed a lawsuit against the state said the ban violated their rights under the U.S. Constitution - and the judge agreed.

The two nurses leading the charge have been together for eight years and want to be able to jointly adopt each others children.

They say the biggest victory is the chance to prove they are a legal and valid family.

Meanwhile, local gay couples, who have been waiting to get married for years, are now preparing to exchange vows on Monday.

The Genesee County clerk says gay couples can get married starting at 8 a.m. Monday morning at the Genesee County courthouse.

Kim Owens and Sue Peters will be there when the doors open.

They have been together 8 years. Sue gave birth to their two sons. The only thing missing is a marriage license.

"We already are a real family, but we are going to be recognized and that is incredible," Owens said.

After years of waiting to get married, they're down to two days - and they are ready.

"We have the paper work, which included our birth certificates, and we have filled out the application," Peters said.

Bright and early Monday morning, they'll head down to the Genesee County courthouse.

"We are going to be open from 8-4," said County Clerk John Gleason.

Gleason says couples will need a birth certificate, a Michigan ID, like a drivers license, $25 for the marriage license and $25 to waive the waiting period to get married on the spot.

For Owens and Peters, getting married means more that just getting a piece of paper - it's legal security.

"After we get married, we are going to start the adoption proceeding. Right now, I do not have rights to my own children," Owens said.
