(03/24/14) - Music, food and more than 1,000 pieces of Cool Art created
primarily by Mid Michigan artists - they'll all be front and center in downtown
Flint, Friday night for the eleventh annual Cool City Art Auction.
"It's one great big party for the artists and the arts community and art enthusiasts, for people who participate on one side or the other. It's awesome," said Cathye Johnson, Greater Flint Arts Council.
The Greater Flint Arts Council, Churchill's, Buckham Gallery and the Wade Trim building will all host gallery parties and silent auctions.
"It's huge, and people come out in droves," Johnson said.
Up for grabs - a rather eclectic mix - one that includes paintings, photographs and jewelry.
"Something for everybody, starting at $5 , all the way to $500," Johnson said.
This year's Cool City Art Auction features a wide variety of mediums. Everything from multi-colored glass sculptures to a bowling ball with eyeballs and wings.
"You'll get something from the graffiti artists, art that's contemporary from local artists, and you'll get the art that's been donated to us that comes from other communities," Johnson said.
While artists have the opportunity to make some money, it's the exposure that's just as valuable.
"We have such a rich base of artists in our community that it's astounding," Johnson said.
Recent Cool City auctions have managed to raise in the neighborhood of $30,000 - with proceeds helping to fund events like Art Walk and Jazz Walk.
"It's very important, so that way we can keep up our programming and continue to work out to the community," Johnson said.
The Cool City Art Auction runs from 5-9 p.m. Friday in downtown Flint.
