(03/25/14) - The final push to finish building the brand new Davison Farmers Market is on.
"Since the weather has backed off a little bit, we've added more crews, we've brought more people in, and we're really ramping it up to try to get this baby kicked out," said Mark Wood, Davison Farmers Market co-owner.
The new market sits on Irish Road, just off I-69.
Over the next few days, one more wall will go up - and electricity will be wired in. After that, all that's left is to pour concrete for the 600-space parking lot. The outdoor pavilion still needs to be finished as well.
Opening day is only five weeks away.
"May 1. May 1. I know it doesn't look like it, but May 1 is the target, and I do believe we're going to hit it," Wood said.
More than 50 vendors have already jumped on board, with space for 10 more outside.
"We've got ribs, we've got doughnuts, we've got pies, we've got a bakery, fish, chicken, eggs, candy. You name it, we have it all," Wood said.
"I'm very pumped up. It's a wonderful thing. I can't wait to be out here," said Tom Alex, of Knob Hill Meats.
Besides traditional vendors, the new Davison Farmers Market will feature two restaurants - on one end, the Chatter Box Deli, and on the other, a Middle Eastern restaurant - the Green Olive Tree.
"We're going to have hot sandwiches that you can serve at lunch, like shawarma sandwiches, falafel sandwiches, humus, and then from there we're going to have salads. Then we'll be on to where you can be the chef and take home some of our marinated meats to your own table," said Brad Jordan, of The Green Olive Tree.
Food aside - outdoor tractor and car shows, along with dunk tanks, potato sack races, and tomato fights are all planned for this summer.
"I think that this is going to be one of those things that once we get it in the community here, it's going to be one of those things that goes on perpetually, hopefully for the next 100 years," Wood said.
