(03/25/14) - The freezing weather we've seen these last three months has been giving Flint trouble keeping up with fixing broken water mains.
Neighbors say a water main at the corner of Saginaw and Myrtle has been broken for a while.
Water gushes out and freezes in the cold temperatures - and that's what's believed to have caused an accident late last week.
The crash last Friday sent pregnant woman and her child to the hospital. Doctors say they'll be OK.
Officials tell us she hit an icy patch and lost control of her SUV. They believe that icy patch is from the water main break.
We talked to the city of Flint, and they say it's an uphill battle to fix these water mains. They're constantly working on them, and they usually get four to five projects done per day.
We caught up with the owner of Muffler Man down the street. He says this water main caused another accident Tuesday morning.
"It's a shame because water's been leaking out of there and people been slipping and sliding. They spun out again this morning. We had to call 911 and tell them to put salt on it. That's the way that lady crashed last week. You know, it's a shame. We're going to have low temperatures tonight. We're going to have the same problem in the morning if they don't solve it," said Lou Winkelhaus, Muffler Man owner.
The city of Flint says they have to prioritize their work. First, they work on broken mains that are leaving people without service. Next, they go to areas that are blocking traffic.
