FLINT (WJRT) -

(03/25/14) - Flint is remembering a woman who gave so much to the community.

Claire Mott White, heir to the Mott family, died Monday at the age of 75.

You could say philanthropy was in her blood. Claire White was the granddaughter of Charles Stewart Mott, who helped found General Motors and the C.S. Mott Foundation.

Her husband was William White, the president of the Mott Foundation.

One of her true passions was making sure everyone had access to the arts in Flint.

"This was her space, she was a wonderful person," said Guy Adamec, an instructor at the Flint Institute of Arts, gesturing the classroom behind him.

Adamec pointed out the chair where Claire used to sit at her pottery wheel.

"She had fun, you know, and if you're having fun, then there's an energy and passion there that's unique," he said.

Claire started taking classes at the FIA at the age of four and continued until just about a week ago.

Adamec showed us the last piece of pottery she made, just a week or so ago - an unfinished teapot. He plans to glaze it and give it to her family.

"She taught here for a while, she served several terms on the board of trustees, she was very involved in the renovation and the addition that we put on," said John Henry, FIA director.

That's why the pottery wing is now named the Claire M. White Studio Wing.

She gave her time and her passion to so many in the community. Bill Kerr of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan remembers how she volunteered with their fundraisers.

"I think one of the things that set her apart from most people is she wasn't verbose, she wasn't out in the lime light," Kerr said. "So to say what did she leave? She left the memories that people like I have."

Memories, along with a legacy of love, giving and an appreciation for the arts.

"She was Claire," said Valorie Horton, who took classes with Claire at the FIA. "I mean everybody loved her."

"I think Claire White was one of our community's unsung heroes," Kerr said.

Claire leaves behind her husband, two children and four grandchildren.
