Program helps homeowners struggling to pay mortgage

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(03/26/14) - Years after the real estate market collapse, families are still struggling to pay their mortgage and keep their homes, but there is help available.

A group called Metro Community Development is offering free counseling to Genesee County homeowners that are in the foreclosure process or dealing with other financial challenges.

ABC12 spoke with a woman who took advantage of that help.

Wynn McCree was one step away from losing her home. She says this program changed her life.

McCree moved into her Flint home in 2005, but her new home came with several challenges.

After McCree bought it, she injured her ankle, which left her out of work.

For four years in a row, she faced foreclosure.

"It left me with taxes that were out of control. I was always every year paying more interest just to keep my home, but never addressing the principal of the taxes," she said.

That's when she reached out to the counselors at Metro Community Development in Flint.

Counselors referred her to the Step Forward Program. It's a mortgage payment assistance program for homeowners receiving unemployment compensation.

After she qualified for it, they paid off her taxes that she owed.

"I'm grateful for that. It gave me a chance to keep my home," McCree said.

The goal of the foreclosure prevention program is to keep people like McCree in their homes.

"We look at the adorability of them maintaining that mortgage. If that is a possibility, we look at the options available via state assistance, through Step Forward Michigan. We also look at their assistance through DHS," said Chennelle Dismond, with Metro Community Development in Flint.

"This is something that the community wants to be there to support people with. We know that families are stronger if they can stay in their homes.

McCree says this program gives her hope for herself and her family.

"And then to still have a home, but it's mine now. And they made it possible for it to continue to be mine," she said.
