Will you keep your land line? - ABC 12 – WJRT – Flint, MI

Will you keep your land line?

RICHFIELD TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(03/26/14) - People worried about phone companies pulling the plug on their land lines got some answers Wednesday night.

This all goes back to legislation signed by Gov. Rick Snyder this week, making it easier for phone companies to end traditional land line service.

This is where the confusion kicks in.

Many people thought land lines were going to be a thing of the past, but what could change is the technology.

Many people packed into the Richfield Township Hall, Wednesday night.

They wanted answers from representatives from various phone companies who attended the meeting.

Bob Stewart, with Frontier Communications, says they aren't doing away with land lines.

"We are not taking your phone line out, it's our business," Stewart said.

But they could pull the plug on the current technology that brings you a dial tone.

"We are transitioning from an analog world to a digital world for your phone service," Stewart said.

Will it be as reliable as an old fashion land line?

Some people at Wednesday's meeting are worried they won't have a phone during a power outage or in rural areas.

"We are never going to let you go without 911. We have back up plans inside the bill that will protect you, we are going to make sure that you have a phone, you are not going to lose your phone right now," said Rep. Pam Faris.

The legislation takes effect in 2017.
