Mid-Michigan residents hurry to beat ACA enrollment deadline

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) -

(03/27/14) - Mid-Michigan health organizations are facing a last minute rush of people who want to enroll in the Affordable Health Care program. Many are finding they qualify for the state's expanded Medicaid assistance.

People are flocking to the www. healthcare.gov website as the March 31 deadline approaches.

"They said the other day a million users were on at the same time," said Jim Milanowski, of Genesee Health Plan.

Thousands in Mid-Michigan have been getting one-on-one advice, and many are also getting help in a classroom setting.

Genesee Health Plan has been offering classes to educate people on the Affordable Healthcare Act and the new, expanded Michigan Medicaid program.

"We've assisted well over 8,000," Milanowski said.

There isn't much room available for classes or individual appointments at the Genesee, Bay or Saginaw Health Plan offices.

"Very, very limited just because it's getting near the end of the enrollment period," Milanowski said.

The government recently announced a grace period.

"If people start the process of enrolling before March 31, they will have some additional time to complete their application," Milanowski said.

Some are signing up for health insurance reluctantly.

"Something being forced on us by the government is never a good thing. Free market. Let companies bid on it. That's always worked best," said Terry Duggins of Flint.

Those who miss this deadline might have to wait several months for another opportunity to enroll.

"They're talking that Nov. 15 will be the next start. This is not set in stone, but that's what we're hearing," Milanowski said.

For low income people who don't qualify for the ACA, the state offers the Healthy Michigan Plan. For more information on that program, click here.
