GM tells Chevy dealers to stop selling some models of Cruze

Posted: Updated:

(03/28/14) - General Motors has told Chevrolet dealers to stop selling certain versions of its popular Cruze models. GM is not saying what the problem is with the 2013 and 2014 cars.

All the Cruzes affected have the Flint-built 1.4 liter turbo four cylinder engine, but GM says the engine is not the problem.

The Cruze is GM's best selling car. GM sent emails to dealers requiring them to stop selling the sedan with the 1.4 liter engine for the time being.

"It could be anything as simple as a program update, a piece of software we need to install all the way up to the complexity of a part being replaced," said Jim Simms of Simms Chevrolet in Clio.

Stop delivery orders aren't common and usually arise when a new problem is detected. By issuing a stop delivery order, GM can avoid a costly recall.

"They can keep the customer safe, they can keep the vehicle safe until they've completed all the research they're doing," Simms said.

Dealers will be given a list of affected cars noted by the vehicle identification number. Cruze models with the 1.8 liter engine or the turbocharged diesel engine are not involved. Simms says with a new emphasis at GM on safety, we could see stop delivery orders more often.

"General Motors said in '09 transparency is the key. The new VP of the safety division of General Motors said transparency and that's what we're seeing," Simms said.

The stop delivery order affects about a third of the Cruze inventory.
