Genesee County march honors memory of Cesar Chavez

Posted: Updated:

(03/20/14) - A tireless worker in the labor industry was honored in Genesee County.

Saturday, a march was held to remember Cesar Chavez. Chavez worked to gain rights for Hispanic workers in the U.S.

At the time he started his work, Hispanic field workers for lettuce, grape and strawberry companies were not given the same rights as other workers.

He fought to get them acceptable working conditions and benefits.

Chavez was born in Arizona, but the city of Flint was the first in the U.S. to name a street after him. Those who honor his memory compare him to Martin Luther King Jr.

Chavez passed away in 1993 at the age of 66.
