GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(03/31/14) - There was a long line and long wait. The deadline to pay delinquent 2011 property taxes, in Genesee County, has now passed.

Those who didn't make it to the treasurer's office Monday, or who weren't in line by 5 p.m., now face foreclosure.

Gwen Biggs, of Flint, waited for about four hours before taking a quick break to get a piece of paperwork she needed.

"I'll be done," Biggs said. All paid off.

"I wasn't able to pay my taxes," said Montreal Anderson, also from Flint.

Anderson was hoping for an extension.

"We are able to help some people, people who are experiencing hardships," said Genesee County Treasurer Deb Cherry.

Cherry still expects her office will have to foreclose on nearly 2,700 residential and commercial properties with tax payments past due for three years now.

The interest racks up, adding to what's already owed.

"They could save almost half of the money they owe us if they'd just pay on time," Cherry said.

Cherry hopes to come in, at least, a little under last year's mark of 2,700-2,8000 foreclosed properties.

"Even if we just stay the same, that's better than it has been," she said.
