President Obama coming to Michigan to discuss raising minimum wage

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(04/01/14) - President Obama is looking at raising the federal minimum wage.

Not everyone is on board.

Some restaurant and shop owners say raising wages would be bad for business.

"I would love a $3 raise," said Gabrielle Hoag, a Kettering University student.

And $3 is roughly what you're looking at if a wage hike does happen.

Right now, the state's minimum wage is $7.40. President Obama wants to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10.

The group 'Raise Michigan' wants to raise the state minimum wage to $10.10, as well as raise the minimum wage for tipped workers from $2.65 to the state-level minimum wage.

"I think this would really stimulate the economy and help, especially Flint, get back on its feet," said Alexis Angel, a UM-Flint student.

But not everyone is on board. The Michigan Restaurant Association sees big problems with this.

They said, in a statement, in part, "The radical Raise Michigan proposal to increase the minimum wage and completely eliminate the tipped minimum wage will not only increase menu prices and cost Michigan jobs, it will put many restaurants out of business."

"I think it's kind of drastic, although I think it's an awesome idea and would help the economy tremendously, I don't know how a $3 raise would be, I don't know how it would effect the economy," Hoag said.

Mike Canan, co-owner at Oliver T's in Grand Blanc Township, says it is time for a raise, but he'd like to see the increases staggered over the years - which is what President Obama and Raise Michigan are proposing.

"That gives employers a chance to kind of figure out the game plan with what they're going to do and how they're going to do it," Canan said.

If that's how it happens - he's on board.

"When you increase wages, you increase spending and then you increase their quality of life," he said.

Wednesday, President Obama will be in Ann Arbor to discuss raising the minimum wage. Check in with ABC12 News - we're going to be there for his speech.
