(04/02/14) - An early morning tanker crash killed one person in Tuscola County.
The sheriff's office tells us it happened early Wednesday morning on Vassar Road near Wilder Road.
Crews were called out shortly after 3:30 a.m.
The Richville Fire Chief believes the truck was carrying 13,000 gallons of fuel - probably ethanol.
Firefighters assessed the environmental situation when they arrived, then decided to let the product burn off.
Investigators believe the tanker was going south on Vassar Road when it crashed, but there's still no word on the cause of the accident.
No other vehicles were involved.
Vassar Road is now back open, after being closed between M-81 and M-46. Traffic was being diverted to Bradleyville Road.
Richville's fire chief describes what he saw when his crews arrived.
"The flames were a good 150, 200 feet in the air. It was burning all the way around the truck for 100 yards. It was quite an intense scene when we got here. We couldn't determine what the truck even was when we first got here, so we had to really try to be quick about finding out what it was so we didn't have to have a big evacuation of people around," said Eric Brown, Richville fire chief.
The body of the driver was found in the cab of the tanker. Their identity has not been released. An autopsy is expected to be conducted Thursday.
