"Light Up the City" kicks off

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(04/02/14) - Speaking up and looking out - that's the goal behind a community campaign that kicked off in Saginaw Wednesday night.

It's called "Light up the City".

The goal is to prevent violence by involving residents in neighborhood watch efforts by turning on their porch light.

"Yesterday, that is when we went door to door and passed out energy efficient light bulbs that are donated by Consumers Energy. So we are asking them to turn their light on, making that light a natural deterrent to crime," said Saginaw Police Officer Jonathon Beyerlein.

Wednesday night was the official kick off.

More than 300 people crowded into the Dow Event center for the kick off event. Afterwards, more than 75 people hit the streets for a night walk.

"We are letting them know that we have their backs," Beyerlein said.

Officer Beyerlein also said officers will go to different neighborhood for the next 13 weeks, handing out light bulbs and hoping to get more neighbors involved.
