Mayor's Wellness Challenge underway in Flint

FLINT (WJRT) -

(04/03/14) - Dayne Walling isn't afraid to break a sweat - in fact, Flint's mayor is encouraging all of Mid-Michigan to do the same.

"We're working it today. This isn't the stuff that I normally do. I like to just get a run or swim in, but working the muscles and getting in the gym is a great reminder that I need to do more of this," he said.

This week, Walling and the Greater Flint Health Coalition launched their first ever Mayor's Wellness Challenge.

"We're going to have more than 1,000 people signed up for this challenge, and we still need people to sign up at Commit to Fit.com. We want people to take advantage of the great parks we have in the city, Genesee County, and all across Mid-Michigan," Walling said.

"Prizes include $25 just for signing up, there's an eligible drawing for that. Fitness Club memberships, gift cards to the Flint Farmers' Market, other cash prizes," said Tony Cuttitta, of the Greater Flint Health Coalition.

Participants are asked to log their minutes of physical activity on the Commit to Fit website. There's no cost to join - and free group fitness classes will be offered every week. Throughout the month, Mayor Walling will oversee a variety of nutritional and active living events.

"We've got a healthy cooking demonstration on April 5, a walk on April 7, and then some other things with the county parks and the Crim later in the month," Cuttitta said.

As part of his commitment to fitness, this month, the Mayor is trading in pop for more water and cutting out after-dinner snacks.

While hitting the gym, he's preparing himself for the Crim Training Program. In case you wondering, the Mayor began the month at 202 pounds.

"I want to lose at least a pound a week. I want to make sure I lose a little weight, but not too much. This isn't a Biggest Loser contest," he said.

As for his progress - let's just say it's a work in progress.

"Will he hear my answer if I tell you the truth? I want him here every day. We're going to get him where he wants to be," said Bo Glasschild, UM-Flint personal trainer.

Commit to Fit's Mayoral Wellness Challenge is open to all Mid-Michigan residents.
