Saginaw police work to solve recent murder: Crime is still down

Posted: Updated:

(04/03/14) - Saginaw Police are following up leads in the shooting death of 20-year-old Devonte Weems.

It happened on Narloch near Findley on the city's northeast side, Wednesday.

Weems death marks the city's first shooting death of the year, and numbers show overall crime is down in the city.

Saginaw Police investigated five deadly shootings in the first three months of 2013.

2014 got off to a less violent start - until Wednesday.

The department hadn't had to deal with a similar crime since last November.

While police try to solve the city's first shooting death of the year, Sergeant Reggie Williams says Saginaw is seeing a decrease in crime. He credits cooperation between different law enforcement agencies for the downturn.

Wednesday's shooting happened just hours before the kickoff of Saginaw's Light up the City Event at the Dow Event Center. That effort asks people to turn on their porch lights and get involved in other anti-crime activities as well.

Williams says Wednesday's shooting shouldn't come between all the positive energy shown by Saginaw residents.

"I think crime is down this year compared to last year so far because of all the good work from our citizens and our police department and Michigan State Police working the homicides that we did have last year and getting those suspects locked up. I think that has made a huge difference with keeping things quiet," he said.

If you have any information about the latest murder, you're asked to contact Saginaw Police.
