Police to seek charges in elderly Flint woman's attack, purse snatching outside church

Posted: Updated:

(04/08/14) - Police plan to seek charges, Wednesday, for three people arrested after an elderly, Flint woman was mugged leaving church Sunday afternoon.

Investigators have a strange piece of evidence in their possession - hair. They're pretty sure the guy, they say they can connect to the crime, tried to change his appearance.

"When he was arrested, he had some fresh razor burn on his neck and clumps of hair on back of head," said Michigan State Police Trooper Jeffery Rodgers. "We were able to, during the search warrant, locate the hair he removed from the top of his head."

Rodgers said police also found drugs inside the Wyoming Avenue home where he was arrested.

"Trace amounts of heroin, marijuana and crack cocaine were eventually secured."

The home is just a few blocks from the church, at Lewis and Leith, near where the 70-year-old woman reported being attacked.

"She was leaving church and walking to her vehicle," Rodgers said. "The suspect walked past her and once she started getting into the car, the suspect approached her and threw her to the ground."

A cell phone was dropped.

"The girlfriend, the owner of the cell phone, returned to the scene," Rodgers said.

She was later arrested, too. So was another man, at the home, who police think helped the first guy hide.

Rodgers said the man tied to mugging was hiding in the attic and fought with troopers when found.

Two children were in the home, too, in a bedroom. They've been turned over to family.

That elderly woman is OK. She had some minor injuries.

It was only a matter of hours from when she called 911 to when state police and Flint Police had the trio in custody.
