Consumers Energy starts aggressive tree trimming program

Posted: Updated:

(04/09/14) - If efforts by tree trimming crews are successful, we may see fewer power outages caused by tree limbs getting tangled up in power lines. Work crews were on Lorraine Avenue, Wednesday, making short work of trees that had grown into Consumer Energy lines.

Consumers is spending $40 million this year on tree and vegetation trimming.

Chainsaws were making lots of sawdust on Flint's east side, and you'll probably see crews like these a lot during the next few months.

"Across the state, Consumers Energy has more than 250 different tree trimming crews out, clearing our lines, making sure any trees that could possibly endanger our lines are trimmed back away from the lines to minimize tree-caused outages," said Jon Hall, of Consumers Energy's forestry division.

Who could forget last winter with the power outages that came with the late December ice storm and subsequent snow storms?

"It was terrible. There was a tree in my backyard that just hung on the wires. You call Consumers and they really didn't have the manpower," said Alice Paquette, of Flint.

"We were out four or five days. It needed to be done," said Marcus Madeja, of Flint.

Consumers told a committee of the State House of Representatives it would make a better effort of clearing away trees. It's been able to narrow down the area where problems are likely to occur.

"We have a process now where we analyze which circuits are really being impacted by trees," Hall said.

All the tree trimming is appreciated.

"They've been through this neighborhood and it looks so nice," Paquette said.

Consumers says when planting new trees and bushes, look up to see if there's a power line overhead.
