State awards Flint $2.3 million to redo roads near new pipe plant site

FLINT (WJRT) -

(04/10/14) - Flint is getting more than $2 million, in state aid, to repair roads near where a new manufacturing plant will be built.

Work will be done in two areas, near each other, on the city's northside. One is a stretch of Stewart Avenue from Dort Highway to James P. Cole Boulevard. The other is Andrew Street from Stewart to Wager Avenues.

The state announced the award Thursday.

"State transportation economic development grants are effective tools to help major companies grow in Michigan and create or retain jobs for workers," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle.

The information sent shows this is total road reconstruction to prepare for the pipe manufacturing plant going on a portion of the former Buick City site.

"Any kind of help we can get, any kind of way we can get it, we'll definitely take it," said Flint City Councilman Bryant Nolden. "The city would not have the resources to be able to do it, so I'm extremely elated to find out MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) has awarded these dollars."

American SpiralWeld, part of American Cast Iron Pipe Company, headquartered in Alabama, was awarded the contract to supply pipe for the Karegnondi Water Authority, or KWA, pipeline.

Mary Loafman works at a business nearby and remembers something similar happening.

"Just before Buick tore down, they redid all this (Stewart Ave.) right down to the dirt," she said.

Nolden says he knows the streets aren't as bad or as well traveled, now, as others in the city.

"With the increased traffic that this economic development is gonna bring, especially with the heavy trucks coming in, I think it was important to resurface these streets and get them ready."

ABC12 was unable to confirm when construction will start.

The pipe company has said it plans to break ground for its project in May or June.
