Bridgeport-Spaulding school board approves concessions

BRIDGEPORT (WJRT) -

(04/11/14) - Bridgeport-Spaulding school board members have approved concessions to help close a $2 million budget shortfall.

The district had until Monday at the close of the business day to submit its revised DEP plan to the state.

Members of the Steel workers union, as well as administrators, also approved concessions.

Bridgeport-Spaulding's DEP was rejected by the state earlier this year. The plan submitted in February included concessions which were not approved by the unions - that's why the state didn't sign off on it.

A spokesperson with the Michigan Department of Education said if the district didn't its meet its deadline, about $1 million in state aid would be at risk.

"They're some tough decisions they have to make and they are their decisions. The Michigan Department of Education does not tell districts that are in deficit status what types of cuts, what decisions to make. What our role is to review the plan that's submitted and to make sure that it's based on real achievable concessions and cuts," said Bill Disessa, of the Department of Education.
