Flint man pitches in to clean city, starts with 1 Rake 1 Shovel

(04/11/14) - It may not seem like much, but a few hours here and there do add up. Torrell King thinks that's a start.

"(I'm) hoping I can spark something in the rest of the community," King said.

King has high hopes what he's doing will push others to at least consider pitching in.

He spent hours Friday, near the corner of Home Avenue and Clio Road, cleaning up trash.

"One rake, one shovel is how I started," he said. So that's what he's calling his endeavor - 1 Rake 1 Shovel.

"I got out, by myself, with a rake and a shovel and started cleaning," he said.

He started a few weeks ago, in other areas in Flint, and started posting where he'd be next on Facebook.

His two daughters were with him when we met up with him. Then a few others showed up.

Jennifer Odom was one of them.

"I moved back in the area, last year, in August," she said. "And was like whoa, WOW!"

"This block look like a war zone," King said. "It's just ridiculous."

So here he is.

"I'm so glad someone took the initiative to do it," Odom said.

And for a few hours, King knows, "I did some good. It feels wonderful."
