New group aims to clean area near Flint's Berston Field House

(04/11/14) - You can help in the fight against blight in the city of Flint.

A man heading up a new community group, United Flint Operations, or UFO, says there's no need to wait for the city to do it.

Everyone can help.

His group is starting with the area around the Berston Field House.

"We need to step up and we need to show the world how important it is to bring the standard of living up to a superior one like we used to have here in Flint," said Mark Baldwin, founder of UFO.

Baldwin says they'll work to make park-like and garden areas around the area near the Berston Field House - a one mile radius around it.

The plan includes rehabilitating homes that can be fixed and encouraging small business growth.

The city is also gearing up for a number of events throughout the month of May.

There is something you can participate in Saturday.

"Tomorrow is Global Service Day and we're asking for as many volunteers as possible to take on trash pickup issues. On the north side, we're going to be taking on Saginaw St. to Dupont and then Hamilton to Pasadena," said Mary ZumBrunned, Flint's Chief Service Officer. "We're going to have an orientation at 8:30 a.m. at the Salem Tool Shed and then we're going to carpool up here."
