Saginaw Twp. homeowners prepare for possible flooding

Posted: Updated:

(04/13/14) - People living near the intersection of South Center and West Michigan in Saginaw Township are familiar with flooding.

Last spring was rough for homeowners.

"Woke up about 6 o' clock in the morning and all I saw was water, my whole house was surrounded," said Dan McGrandy, who lives on West Michigan Avenue.

In fact, McGrandy's front porch looked more like a dock - he was using a boat to leave his house and get to work.

And that's not the first time his front yard's looked more like a lake. The same exact thing happened when his grandparents lived there nearly three decades ago, in 1986.

"We have pictures of my grandpa and grandma getting picked up (with a boat) off of what used to be the front porch, and it came within two inches of hitting the main floor," he said.

Last spring, homeowners were evacuated all along West Michigan, but McGrandy decided to stay.

This year, he knows how to prepare.

"We actually moved everything up in my detached garage and in my attached garage and I got a few things out of here just to be able to make sure they weren't going to get wet," he said.

The Quik Mart sits in the flood zone - right at the corner of Michigan and Center. Employees hope they don't get flooded out and lose hours.

"It would be very bad because we won't be able to make any money and I'm just starting to get a step ahead in life with this job," said Ashley Bradley, who works as a cashier.

State Police sent out some tips: they say if you're in an area prone to flooding, to keep sandbags nearby and put your valuables in a water tight container.
