(04/14/14) - The roof of the gym at Byron Middle and High School is in shambles after it was torn off by strong winds over the weekend.
The superintendent says that gymnasium is about 30 years old.
Crews have been out all weekend cleaning up the mess that the storm left behind.
Class was canceled Monday for students in Byron. The strong winds also knocked out power in the area.
As crews clean up the mess, an insurance company is also there figuring out how much damage was done.
"Then with the winds and the water, damage to the floor. Some structural damage, possibly, that's why we're working with companies to have inspections, damage to the roof of the middle school. Our heating system which are roof top units on our middle school were blown off," said Superintendent Tricia Murphy-Alderman.
Murphy-Alderman says there's a series of steps that will be taken to make sure the buildings will be secure before students return back to class.
"The best thing is to work with your administrative team and the outside resources to get things done as fast as possible so that we can have kids return back for school," she said.
The superintendent says there's no telling at this time when students will return.
