Free smoke detectors available for Saginaw residents

SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(04/14/14) - Thanks to a federal grant, people who live in the City of Saginaw can have some extra peace of mine.

Monday, the fire department received the first shipment of 10,000 smoke detectors.

They all have a 10 year lithium battery and are sealed, so it can't be removed.

The smoke detectors are free to city residents and include a safety evaluation of your home.

"This is the first defense against any type of injury or even a fatality. Many times when homes do not have a working smoke detector, you will find that there is an incident in your home, it's kind of too late before you get a chance to respond. With a working smoke detector in your home, you have a better chance to survive," the fire marshal said.

If you're a Saginaw City resident and want a smoke detector, call the fire department at 989-759-1393.

If you need them installed, the department may even be able to help.
