Tax preparers to be open late on Income Tax Day

Posted: Updated:

(04/15/14) - Liberty Tax Service in Burton is trying to put a little fun in the final day of filing season.

"We're having a tax bash. We've got hot dogs, we've got popcorn, a $5 gift card for Tim Horton's with every paid tax return," said Leslie Howe, of Liberty Tax Service.

Liberty opened at 5 in the morning, and has seen a steady flow of last minute filers walk through the door - armed with excuse after excuse.

"I'm a procrastinator, I guess you can say. It is what it is," said Michael Powell.

"I'm an ex-military man, so I'm always on time, but just wanted to have a little fun today," said Eric Miller.

That "fun" won't end until late tonight.

"We'll be here until the last person leaves. You've got until midnight to get your extension or return in the mail, if you're going to e-file, you have until 3 a.m. to get it to transmit," said Christine McComas, of Liberty Tax Service.

While Liberty's tax preparers promise to be thorough until the very end, they do recommend showing up sooner, rather than later.

"We'll be fresher and more alert. Caffeine can help, but after a while, we've been here since 4:30. It's a long day," McComas said.

As for those procrastinators we spoke with - in both their cases, it actually paid off to wait.

"Sure. I don't owe anything, so I can't complain," Miller said.

"I got a nice refund, so I'm happy. It's a great day," Powell said.
